One of our founders wrote over 400 scientific papers on thermophilic organisms. He led the hunt for one that could not only be persuaded to produce bioethanol, but would feed on relatively complex sugars, avoiding the need for costly input of enzymes necessary to reduce feedstock to simple sugars.

The search took years and ranged from the oceans to compost heaps. But in the end it gave us a real time advantage, for we found our organism (or at least, its ancestor) in the natural world.  

It thrives in temperatures of 60 degrees plus, which confers even more benefits. For one thing, fermentation processes work faster at higher temperatures, and a faster throughput enables us to use smaller, cheaper vessels which in turn keeps our overall costs down.
