Management team

TMO is led by a team of seasoned entrepreneurs with a track record of commercial success in the oil and gas, energy, technology development, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. The company now comprises 38 full time staff, 33 of whom are dedicated to engineering and research.

Tim Yeo, Chairman

Tim Yeo has been MP for South Suffolk since 1983. Before entering Parliament, Tim held a number of posts in business and was on the board of a number of quoted companies. Since 2010 he has been Chairman of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee. Tim holds a number of non-executive directorships in the energy and health sectors. Appointed Chairman of TMO Renewables Limited in November 2010.

 

Dr Steven M Martin, Research Director

Previously Head of Fermentation at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, responsible for the UK pilot plant and the fermentation activities at two manufacturing sites in Italy. Joined TMO in 2005. Directly responsible for proprietary research programmes, managing the process biotechnology, fermentation and analytical groups. Also responsible for scaling up TMO’s fermentation process to manufacturing scale.

More than 15 years’ industrial experience in microbial fermentation and written more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

Hamish Curran, CEO

Over 20 years’ international management and consulting experience in the energy and renewables sector. Joined TMO in 2006 from Argent Energy, where he was Chief Operating Officer, being responsible for the construction, start-up and commissioning of the first industrial scale bio-diesel plant in the UK.

Prior positions have included Managing Director for Wavegen, which constructed the world’s first grid connected wave power generation plant, and General manger and Asset Director for JKX & Gas plc.

A former member of the UK Government Oil & Gas Industry Task Force with broad experience of cross-border projects as well as a consulting record in the energy, utilities and automotive engineering sectors.

Has provided oil and gas industry advice at Governmental level in the UK, Ireland and Former Soviet Union.

Prof. Anthony Atkinson B.Sc., Ph.D, FIIB, FIoN, Technical Director

After 25 years with the UK Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research (CAMR) where he was Deputy Director and Director of the Commercial Biotechnology Division, Tony moved on in 1994 to pursue his industrial and commercial interests. He has consulted for Schering-Plough, DuPont and ICI and is on UK regulatory and advisory committees in biosciences and nanotechnology. A former member of the Advisory Board of Merlin Ventures, Tony has interests in several other biotech companies. He was CEO of Enact Pharma PLC, which acquired Enzacta PLC and was later sold to Protherics PLC. He is currently Non-Executive director of Fusion Plc, Lab21 and Non-Executive Chairman of Morvus Technology Limited. He has published over 400 scientific papers and registered 20 patents, many of which are licensed to the likes of Boehringer, Biogen and DuPont. Over 120 of these papers relate to the biotechnology of thermophiles and their products. TMO benefits from Tony’s unique experience in thermophile genetics and manipulation.

Jason Robinson, Associate Director of Engineering

Wide variety of industrial experience, specifically in the area of renewable fuels such as biodiesel and ethanol which was initiated from his extensive experience in the pulp & paper industry.

Prior to his work at TMO (where he has designed and built the UK’s first lignocellulosic ethanol demonstration facility) he led and participated in several projects specific to lignocellulosic ethanol production in both Europe and the US – namely pilot and demonstration facilities, designing pre-treatment, enzyme hydrolysis and fermentation systems. 

Robert Parker, Chief Financial Officer

A commercially astute Finance Director who enjoys the entrepreneurial spirit within businesses. Experienced in both the strategic and operational development of international and UK companies. A track record of fundraising in private and public sectors. 

Prior positions include Finance Director of Immedia Broadcasting PLC – an AIM listed business and leading provider of live, in-store radio. CFO of Manquehue (Minority Holding of National Grid), a Chilean based telecoms provider turning over £50million.

Nick Rodgers, Non-Executive Director

A highly experienced and successful corporate financier with considerable track record of fundraising and transactions for small and medium sized businesses in the UK.  Significant exposure to companies in the healthcare, medical, biotechnology and environmental sectors. Has advised on over 100 acquisitions or disposals, some 40 flotations and 20 takeovers.

Has held prior positions with Ernst & Young, the London Stock Exchange and Evolution Securities (formerly Beeson Gregory).  A founder and Chief Executive of Ipso Ventures plc, Deputy chairman and senior independent non-executive director of Oxford BioMedica plc and a non-executive director of Morvus Technology Limited.

Christopher Miller, Non-Executive Director

Qualified as a chartered accountant with Coopers & Lybrand. Became Associate Director of Hanson plc – then, in 1988, Chief Executive of Wassall PLC. Spent three years in the private investment industry before becoming an executive Director of Melrose in 2003. Currently Chairman of TMO Renewables Limited.
