Lactic Acid consumption was around 380,000 tpa in 2002 with a global annual value of about $700 million.
However, projections by the US government show a potential US market for biodegradable solvents, oxychemicals and plastics based on lactic acid of some $4.5 billion by 2020 provided that the production costs can be lowered.
The TMO Thermophile technology platform could significantly decrease these production costs which would greatly enhance the market demand for lactic acid based biodegradable polymers (polylactic acid / PLA) and open up other markets such as the use of lactate salts as biodegradable deicers.
