Hydrogen from Ethanol – The future of transportation?
01/05/2022
With the passing of the “Directive on the promotion of the use of biofuels or other renewable fuels for transport” this month in Brussels the European Union has officially stated that it intends to give strong support and encouragement to biofuels.
The Directive sets targets for the adoption of biofuels in all Member States of the Union. Encouraging the biofuels market to grow to 5.75% of the total liquid fuels market by 2010 is viewed by many as an ambitious goal. At the same time, it is essential to aim high in order the reap the manifold benefits that biofuels can offer to all producers and consumers.
While significantly lowering the emissions of CO2 and delivering cleaner emissions biofuels also offer social and economic advantages of some importance. The ability to produce transportation fuels within the borders of the European Union will impact on the vast amount of imported oil required for the transportation section (98% of such fuel is imported from outside the Union). Similarly the addition funding provided to the agricultural sector will provide a useful boost to rural economies.
TMO Biotec is uniquely placed to benefit from these developments. The technology being developed by TMO Biotec will have a major impact on the efficiency and cost of Biomass to Biofuels processes. Delivering the ability to exceed the 5.75% threshold is TMO Biotec’s long-term goal.
